I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing more satisfying to me during a wash day than getting that squeaky clean feeling. It’s my way of knowing that my scalp is as fresh as it could be. And while I would like to say that shampoo and conditioner is all I need to do the trick, sometimes I need that little extra oomph to make sure I’m getting rid of any and all buildup.
If you’re someone who styles your hair with different products on a regular basis, you know how important scalp health is and how easy it can be to cause buildup if you’re not careful. Fortunately there are scalp exfoliators that, in addition to your usual wash day routine go-to’s, can work wonders to reduce any itchiness, flakiness, dryness, and flatness. As a result, you get healthier hair without neglecting your scalp in the long run.
At the same time, there are dozens of these kinds of products out there, which means that finding the right one for you can be a challenge. To save you the time, I spoke with fellow editors, in addition to board certified trichologist, celebrity hairstylist, and co-founder of Arey Jay Small to find out which ones are worth every dime.

What’s the difference between physical and chemical exfoliators?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions about exfoliators, and the difference is simple. Anything with small particles or grains that manually buff away buildup is considered physical. Chemical exfoliants include ingredients like AHAs and BHAs that dissolve buildup and oil at a cellular level, which is often more gentle. “While both methods can be effective, I rely on chemical exfoliants to efficiently dissolve buildup without unnecessary abrasion,” says Small. “However, the best approach often depends on your specific scalp type, sensitivity, and sensorial preference.”
When is the best time to use a scalp exfoliator?
According to Small, the best time to use a scalp exfoliator is before shampooing, on dry or slightly damp hair one to two times per week. “This allows the exfoliant to directly target buildup without being diluted by water or competing with other products,” he says. Unless stated otherwise (or if you’re using it as a formula that doubles as a shampoo), using it as a pre-wash allows you scalp to absorb the shampoo or any other treatments.
How do you know if you’re over-exfoliating your scalp?
Every exfoliating product comes with very specific instructions on how and how often to use it. Still, everyone has a slightly different response to ingredients, so keeping tabs to make sure you’re not over-exfoliating is a must. “Over-exfoliation often shows up as increased sensitivity, dryness, or irritation on the scalp,” says Small. “You may also notice flaking that feels more reactive than buildup-related, or a tight, uncomfortable feeling after washing.” He adds that a compromised scalp barrier can also lead to more oil production and skin shedding so finding a consistency that works for you is a major part of the process.
